   Au Pairs are “big sisters” to American children, and are

important member of their host family.  

    The words Au Pair come from French, meaning 'at par', or 'equal to', and therefore an

    Au Pair comes to live as part of the family, being treated as a family member. Over

    45,000 au pairs, aged between 18 and 26 years old, from over 40 countries have

    participated on the Au Pair in America  program - come and join the largest and most

v     A US$500 to US$1,000 allowance for you to attend classes of your choice.  This is the perfect opportunity for you to work towards an on-campus American Bachelor's or Master's degree program.  Or to just have a thoroughly enjoyable year, by choosing fun courses related to your hobbies and interests

You must :

ý Be aged 18 – 26 years old    

ý Hold a valid driving license

ý Be able to commit to 12 months

ý Have completed at least secondary education. Prior academic achievements and qualifications are not a requirement of this program.

ý  Have at least 200 hours recent, practical childcare experience, such as regular babysitting for non-family members, helping at a local school, youth group.  Aceglobal can help you in classifying your experience. To care for children less than two years old, the 200 hours experience must be with children less than two and you must be at least 19 years old

Not have a criminal record

ý Able to communicate in English

ý Be mature and independent

ý  Have not have previously participated in an au pair program to the U.S.  
 

Your duty

As an au pair in America you will provide your host family with up to 45 hours per week of childcare – during not more than 5½ days per week, and no more than 10 hours per day.  And this is what An-li does in a typical day.

 
Your duties will be centered on the children and you will not be expected to do heavy housework.  Your responsibilities may include:
v   waking the children, dressing infants and toddlers, bathing and playing with them
v   preparing meals for the children, tidying away their belongings, making their beds and doing their laundry
v   driving the children to or from school, appointments and outings
v   helping the children with their homework
v   caring for the children while they are asleep if the parents are not at home

Your host parents will also be keen for you to teach their children about your home country and its culture and traditions.

What will a typical day be like as an au pair in America?  Each au pair will have a different schedule depending on the host family's needs and the age of the children.  Here is what a typical might be like looking after a 6 year old school age boy and a 2½ year old toddler girl where both host parents are working.
